The Tongue

Extending
Down the throat
Rooted in the heart
It dwells
Unseen and unruly

Every word
Each utterance
Individual phrase
Particular sentence
Selected

To send words a flight
To hold them at bay
To discern timing
To lift in prayer
Decided

Self
Spits impulsively
Throwing destruction
Along its path
Slaying hearts with
Darts
Sticks
Daggers
Stones
Malevolent tracks
Littered with
Wounded souls
A legacy
Of decay

Spirit
Overflows gracefully
Offering gifts
Along its Way
Enlivening hearts with
Gems
Nuggets
Roses
Swords
Benevolent trails
Glinting with
Empowered souls
A legacy
Of life

To whom
O power of death and life
Will you surrender?

1 Peter 3:10
For,“Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.

James 3:5-6
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

James 3:7-8
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.

Matthew 15:11
It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.

Job 34:3
For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food.

Psalm 34:13
keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.

Psalm 37:30
The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just.
