The Dungeon

English: Dungeon at Tantallon The barrel-vault...

The dungeon is the dark place in the soul where the pain of the past cowers. Sound scary? Let me share with you a secret about the dungeon.

Within the body of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit you choose to visit the dungeon for healing. Dungeon visits unravel the bondage of the past which controls your life and hinders God’s will for you and your relationships.

As you think about the dungeon, the voice that screams loudest declares emphatically, “The dungeon is much too evil and fierce. There you cannot stand. You will be overwhelmed. And nothing at all will be gained.” Interestingly, the source of the declaration is revealed in the fact that exactly the opposite is true.

That dark place seems like a foreign land to you, a place you’d like to forget. But because it resides within you and affects your life, it is one that you must subdue spiritually. God has already given the land to you because at salvation Christ claimed all of your soul as His own and you are in Him. He is waiting for you to decide to go in and take it by faith.

When you first visit, if you ever dare, the darkness and fear can be intimidating. But you must remember you are entering in the prayers of the saints and in the Spirit’s unyielding power. You, the apparent victim, stand 6 inches tall while the demons facing you tower up to 12 feet tall with chests spanning 5 feet. Not a hospitable place.

Ignoring the hallow voice of doom, you choose to walk in Joshua’s footsteps and follow God’s leading. You bravely step inside. Closing your eyes, you reach for courage. You allow the monologue of your repressed reality to bubble to the surface…you face the suppressed memories…tears flow…emotions collide within you…pain threatens to tear your soul…but you persist and declare your truth…and more truth…and even more…and these truths, once spoken, begin slowly to triumph over the lies, His light over your darkness.

Every time you revisit, truth forces another ray of light through the dungeon walls.
Every time you revisit, the demons shrink in height.
Every time you revisit, you grow in height.

Visit by visit as the demons shrink you grow in stature, eventually to tower over them. Sure, they still operate, but on a smaller scale than before. Their orders, once daunting F-15 fighter jets, fly now as paper airplanes carrying no real power anymore. After many dungeon visits, memories clarify, tears dry up, emotions settle, and pain dissipates. Your soul then operates in a transformed and healed state distinctly different than it did before. The lies within have shrunk in exposure to the truth as has the darkness in exposure to the light. Thus, there is more light in your soul to walk in naturally.

Once you invite Christ’s light into the dungeon, that secret place is no longer a secret, and in time, not so scary anymore. Unpleasant, but not scary. To boot, the dungeon’s hold on you is released, the habits it perpetuated fall behind you and your eyes see clearly where they once were blind. In other words, your past no longer automatically controls your present.

In the dungeon now you are no longer a victim, but a growing victor in Christ. As a growing victor, you learn that the process of releasing the false self and walking in the true self is not impossible as you once thought, but a natural and believable reality. You can partner with God in the healing of your soul by taking back what is rightfully yours. By God’s persevering Spirit, His illuminating Word and His supportive body you can and will succeed.

Now that you know the secret about the dungeon, you have one question to ponder.

Will you surrender your dungeon to the light of Christ and allow Him to make you His victor there?
